You may have heard about the recent rash of executions that have taken place in Texas: Lamont Reese (June 20), Angel Maturino Resendiz (June 27), and Derrick O'Brien (July 11). O'Brien marked the fourteenth execution in Texas so far this year, which is getting near the 2005 grand total of nineteen. Rankings for all states can be found here - Texas is way ahead of the pack at fourteen, where Ohio and South Carolina are tied for second place with 2006 totals adding up to three executions each.
A list of scheduled executions (with offender information) can be found at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Death Row Information page, as well as those that have been executed (with offender information and last statement). Other statistics on the state's Death Row page include information on pre-1973 death row (when the electric chair was used), women on death row, offenders that are no longer on death row (and why), and death row fact tidbits (did you know that the death penalty was federally outlawed on June 29, 1972, but returned to Texas on January 1, 1974, and lethal injection wasn't first used until late 1982?).
Mauriceo Brown is scheduled to be put to death on July 19 for the 1995 murder of a San Antonio man, but has a hearing scheduled tomorrow where his lawyers are said to have DNA evidence that will put Brown in the clear. If Brown is exonerated, there's always the execution of Robert Anderson, just one day later.
Anti-death penalty information can be found at the ACLU and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty sites. Pro-capital punishment information can be found at Pro Death Penalty and Justice for All. An extensive list containing both sides of the argument is maintained by the Clark County Indiana Prosecuting Attorney's page.
