New execution date----female
Execution Date Set For Baby Killer
A woman on Texas death row has learned her execution date: April 18, 2007. A jury convicted Cathy Lynn Henderson of killing 3-month-old Brandon Baugh back in January of 1994.
She was baby-sitting the child in Northeast Travis County.
Brandon disappeared in 1994. He was in the care of his baby sitter, Henderson. A month later, investigators found the baby's body buried in a wine box near Temple in Bell County. A jury later convicted Henderson of killing the infant.
For Brandon's parents, the wait for Henderson's final punishment has been excruciating. KXAN reporter Shannon Wolfson spoke with them via telephone on Sunday about the case and has this report.
Imagine losing a child to murder, and the killer is a trusted baby sitter. For the parents of Brandon, that's been a horrifying reality. But they hope Monday, inside the Justice Complex, they'll be one step closer to justice for Brandon.
In February 1994, former Travis County Sheriff Terry Keel said of Henderson, "She is uncaring. She is smug to the extent that she appears to be perfectly at ease, if not amused."
Nearly 13 years ago, Henderson began a nightmare. With the judge scheduled to sign her death warrant just hours from now, we spoke with the Baughs by phone, from their home outside of Dallas.
Wolfson asks, "When you hear the name Cathy Henderson, what is your feeling?"
Eryn Baugh, Brandon's father, replies: "In one word, rage. The last 13 years is just time that's gone by. Life's been on hold. We've been waiting for justice to happen. We're looking forward to having this put to an end. Finally, some closure and being able to move on."
But as we learned for the Baughs, moving on means looking back.
"He was really tiny," said Brandon's mother, Melissa Baugh. "He was really sweet. Great baby."
In pictures, his bright, brown eyes and sweet smile are reminders of all that would never be.
As Eryn put it, "So many hopes and aspirations that I had for Brandon, and all those were just taken away in a moment of her rage."
The Baughs have been a constant presence in the courtroom over the years. Eryn says Monday will be no different.
"This is something we've been waiting for. It's been about 12 1/2 years since the trial's been over with, and it's just the next step before we finally see justice done."
Eryn and Melissa will be in Judge John Wisser's courtroom Monday morning for the signing of the death warrant. Wolfson asked them if they wanted to be there when Henderson is executed. Their answer: "Absolutely."
After the judge signs the warrant, Henderson's attorneys will have a chance to appeal to the Supreme Court. The High Court can either choose to hear the case and issue a stay or refuse to hear it completely. If that happens, the execution will likely be carried out at the end of February.
