Former GOP Official, Friend Face Death in Vegas Double Slaying
A former Clark County Republican Party official is pleading with jurors to spare his life. His convicted co-defendant is offering a quiet apology.
The penalty phase of the murder-for-hire trial of John Chartier and David Wilcox continues today in Clark County District Court.
The 37-year-old Chartier and the 43-year-old Wilcox were convicted Friday of 1st-degree murder. It's now up to the jury to decide whether they should be put to death for the 2004 slayings of Rachel Bernat and her father, Carlos Aragon. Bernat was Chartier's ex-wife.
Prosecutors say the slaying stemmed from a bitter custody dispute over the couple's young son. Wilcox is an ex-Marine who prosecutors say carried out the slayings out of loyalty to his friend, Chartier, a former G-O-P party treasurer.
