Tyler Morning Telegraph A capital murder defendant has been indicted a third time for killing an elderly woman. Clifton Lamar Williams, 22, 220 S. Fannin Ave., was indicted June 29 for allegedly robbing, beating, stabbing and burning to death Cecilia Schneider, 93, on July 9, 2005. The new indictment added that he committed the murder in the course of obstruction or retaliation, meaning he could have killed her because she was a potential witness to a crime. Williams was initially indicted in October, charged with killing Ms. Schneider by stabbing, striking, inflicting sharp or blunt force injuries, burning her or her habitation or by strangling her, any of which he did in the course of committing or attempting to commit burglary of a habitation, robbery or arson. It also alleged he used a deadly weapon in the offense. He was indicted again on June 15, alleging that an object unknown to the grand jury could have been used, as well as other known sharp and blunt objects. Prosecutors have announced their intent to seek the death penalty against Williams and defense attorneys have said they intend to raise an insanity defense. If convicted of capital murder, he faces life in prison or the death penalty. The new indictment does not affect the September trial date. The Smith County grand jury issued 72 additional indictments in 114th District Judge Cynthia Stevens Kent's court on June 29.
