In Richmond, Va., federal appeals court upheld the death sentence Friday of a former Camp Lejeune Marine convicted of the 1991 rape and murder of 2 women in Pitt County.
The ruling came from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Warren Robert Gregory, 37.
Gregory and 2 other Marines were drinking and driving to a club in Greenville from their military base early Aug. 24, 1991, when they saw 2 women and a man walking along the road. They offered them a ride, but the man turned them down.
The Marines left but turned around and robbed them at gunpoint, then ordered the women into the car and wounded the man. The women were taken to a wooded area, raped and killed.
The women's bodies were discovered more than 2 weeks later along with a key to one of the Marines' barracks room at Lejeune. 2 of the Marines - Kendrick Bradford and Richard Gonzales - confessed to their roles in the deaths of Bernadine Parrish and Bobbie Jean Hartwig.
