INDIANAPOLIS - Three Indianapolis men killed four people, including a female accomplice, and wounded eight others during an 18-day crime spree that targeted drug and gambling houses in Indianapolis and Evansville, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
Jarvis Brown and Gabriel Jordan, both 25, and Teddy Weems, 20, face possible sentences including the death penalty and life imprisonment if convicted, Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Brookman said.
They were arrested in Indianapolis on Dec. 31, three days after Brown and Jordan fired five bullets into accomplice Vanessa Hankins, 26, of Indianapolis, on a sidewalk on the near east side of the city.
Evansville detectives had questioned Hankins the day before she was killed about the Dec. 26 shooting death of drug dealer Jahi Bell, 28, of Evansville, during a drug house robbery in the southwestern Indiana city. The indictment said Brown shot and killed Bell.
Hankins, whose mother lives in Evansville, had been visiting the city at the time, and her SUV was found near the scene of Bell's shooting.
Hankins had been the getaway driver during several of the trio's alleged crimes in Indianapolis, including the Dec. 20 slaying of marijuana dealer Ricky Green, the indictment said.
"Brown and Jordan agreed to murder Hankins to prevent her from providing information to the police," the indictment said.
On the day of their arrests, Brown and Jordan allegedly shot the fourth slaying victim, David Twitty, and robbed him of cash, the indictment said. The shooting occurred at a north side Indianapolis business where Brown and Jordan had planned to steal marijuana from an acquaintance of Twitty.
Brown, Jordan and Weems, armed with an assault rifle, shotguns and various handguns, also robbed various gambling houses in Indianapolis, prosecutors said.
The charges against the three include conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute crack cocaine, cocaine and marijuana; conspiracy to commit robbery; and federal firearms charges related to the use of firearms during the commission of drug trafficking or violent crimes.
It was not immediately clear when initial court hearings for the three would be held before a federal magistrate in Evansville, prosecutors said.
Weems was sentenced June 2 to 11 months in prison for convictions on state charges of theft and receiving stolen property. He is incarcerated at the Reception and Diagnostic Center of the Indiana Department of Correction in Plainfield.
Brown is in the custody of federal marshals, and Jordan is being held at the Marion County Jail.
