The California Supreme Court on Monday upheld the 1995 death sentence of a Riverside man convicted of stabbing a Highgrove boarding house resident.
In its ruling, the state high court turned down several challenges by Gregory Spiros Demetrulias, 52 .
He was condemned for the Jan. 10, 1989 slaying of Robert Miller, 57, in his room at the boarding house on Center Street.
On the night of the slaying, residents said they heard someone yelling "Give me your wallet," and saw a man they identified as Demetrulias flee the boarding house.
The dying man's last words were: "He stabbed me in the heart. He's killed me." Miller had 4 stab wounds on his body, including a fatal wound in his chest.
Demetrulias claimed the killing was self-defense.
