Editor's note: The following letter is in reaction to the June 26 Daily Press editorial titled "Why the death penalty won't work".)
EDITOR:
The death penalty is a deterrent.
It deters that criminal from ever murdering again. The swift, certain justice that the death penalty started out to be has been slowed to a snails pace, an uncertain justice to be sure, but when a death penalty is utilized, it does deter crimes because criminals know that the state has no compunction against swift, sure punishment.
Those who argue the morality of the death penalty always disregard the morality of the crimes committed.
Very little "press" time is given to the gruesome details of the murder in order for the murderer to get a "fair" trial.
Murderers never give their victims a fair trial and the never give their victims a stay of execution, unless that victim is armed and prepared to defend themselves.
The current legal and political climate in Michigan would almost preclude that circumstance from happening, even with concealed carry permits and the revising of the "duty to retreat" in self-defense cases.
There have been some cases of wrongdoing in some cases, but thats what "12 good men and true" are supposed to be there for.
