A handful of states allow death row inmates to choose their own method of execution. Among them:
-Virginia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina allow the inmate to choose between electrocution or injection.
-Arkansas gives inmates who committed the offense before July 4, 1983, the option to select between injection or electrocution.
-Kentucky gives inmates who committed the offense before March 31, 1998, the option to select between injection or electrocution.
-Tennessee allows those sentenced before Jan. 1, 1999, to choose between electrocution or injection.
-California inmates can choose between injection or lethal gas.
-Maryland allows inmates who committed the offense before March 25, 1994, to select between injection or lethal gas.
-Missouri inmates may be executed by injection or gas, but the statute leaves unclear who decides the method.
-Washington inmates may choose between injection or hanging.
