The murder conviction and death sentence of a Robins Air Force Base airman have been upheld by Maj. Gen. Mike Collings following an extensive review of all court records and clemency requests.
Collings, the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center commander, was the convening authority in the trial of Senior Airman Andrew Witt, who was convicted of murdering Senior Airman Andrew Schliepsiek and his wife, Jamie, at their base residence on July 5, 2004.
Witt was also convicted of attempted murder in the stabbing of Senior Airman Jason King. The verdicts were issued by a military jury last October.
Under the military justice system, Collings had broad latitude to rule on the verdict, including ordering a lesser sentence or declaring Witt not guilty and setting him free.
The commander's decision clears the way for an appeals process that likely will require several years. The president ultimately must sign the execution order before Witt can be put to death.
The 24-year-old airman is currently being held at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
