Expect to see Resendiz appeals until the very end
He doesn't look like an angel, but he thinks he is.
"He doesn't believe that he is going to die and come back to life. He just
believes that he isn't gonna die because he is an angel," said said his
attorney, Jack Zimmerman.
Angel Maturino Resendiz calls himself the "Angel of Death" in letters to
people all over the country.
He admits killing and said God told him to do so.
"He played the system like a fiddle. A master manipulator of deceit whose
heinous brazen acts mask the true markings of the cold blooded diabolical
serial killer that he is," said victims' advocate Andy Kahan.
The railcar killer haunted Houston for months in 1998 and 1999.
Authorities in 6 states suspect him in 15 murders.
A nationwide manhunt led to his arrest in 1999.
Resendiz now wears a scruffy beard due in part to his not being allowed
access to sharp objects. He's been known to cut himself.
Despite the testimony of four of six doctors who evaluated him, Judge Bill
Harmon ruled that Resendiz understands that he is to be put to death.
That date with death next week still stands.
"Resendiz is imminently competent to be executed. This was a final
maneuver in his years-long manipulation of the system," said .
Technically under the law, there is no appeal available to Resendiz.
That does not mean that his attorneys won't pursue appeals all the way to
the Supreme Court up until the minute of the execution.
"Mr. Resendiz guilt is not in issue. His sentence is not in issue, but in
this country we do not execute people who are insane," said prosecutor Roe
Wilson.
Crime victims' advocate Andy Kahan believes Resendiz does suffer from
delusions and not just psychotic ones.
"His delusions of grandeur are finally going to end on June 27 th," Kahan
said.
Technically, Resendiz is being executed for the 1998 killing of Houston
Dr. Claudia Benton.
But Members of several victims' families have expressed interest in
witnessing the execution.
11 News reporter Jeremy Desel will be one of five media members who will
witness the execution.
You can expect to see all possible appeals filed including one challenging
the method of execution.
That's in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing such last
minute appeals just last week.
