stay of impending execution
Judge halts scheduled execution of convicted murderer
In Harrisburg, a federal judge on Wednesday ordered a stay of execution for a man convicted of killing 2 people in Monroe County.
Manuel Sepulveda, 27, had been scheduled to die July 27 for the deaths of John Mendez and Ricardo Lopez in 2001.
U.S. District Judge Thomas I. Vanaskie put the execution on hold while Sepulveda pursues further appeals.
There were 217 men and 5 women on Pennsylvania's death row as of June 1.
Since the death penalty was reinstated 28 years ago, 3 state prisoners have been executed, and all had abandoned their appeals.
