We asked readers at Journal Times.com for their opinions on the death penalty. Wisconsin does not currently have the death penalty.
Here's what online readers said:
Steph wrote: I am for the death penalty!
Another blogger wrote: If you murder you die as well. No more wasting tax dollars! Bring back the death penalty!
Kat wrote: Jeffrey Dahmer. Son of Sam. Charles Manson. Timothy McVey. Susan Smith. Perfect examples of why we need the death penalty. No, killing them won't (or didn't) bring back the people they killed, but it will make sure that they don't (won't) kill anyone else.
JAKC wrote: Kat: How many people did those you name kill after they were caught?
Sinner wrote: I agree with Kat. It isn't about deterrence. There are no words you can use to console survivors of victims of a killer that has "done his time". I'd execute 10,000 if it would protect your/my child, wife, mother.
Flyguy wrote: Let's actually be progressive and add pedophiles and rapists to the execution list!!
Just Me wrote: I think everyone should have to watch the movie "The Life of David Gale." It changed my entire perspective.
I have also seen how unjust and corrupt the legal/justice system in this country can be. Life and Death should not be up to them. Innocent people fall through the cracks all of the time.
It simply isn't worth it. And from what I know the death penalty is
actually more expensive than imprisonment. In cases where there is absolute proof and absolute surety of guilt of a heinous crime...those people will never get paroled anyway. And if there is not absolute proof or surety, then we certainly shouldn't be using the death penalty on them.
CRK wrote: My only problem with the death penalty is the seemingly endless appeals that the convict gets. Why should my tax dollars go to support somebody like that for 20 or 30 years while he is filing appeal after appeal? I say you get one, maybe 2 appeals ...
Especially if there are several credible eye-witnesses, there is no
excuse.
Sue wrote: I agree the death penalty should be enforced. If you kill, then why should we give you three meals a day and shelter?
Ty wrote: Let's do it this way, if you vote against the death penalty then you will pay the taxes that support those criminals serving life sentences. If you vote for the death penalty you don't have to pay. Let's see how the voting goes then. My guess is that the death penalty will pass in a landslide.
There is no reason to keep someone in a prison until they die. That is inhumane. Forcing someone to sit around for the next 30 years waiting to die is inhumane.
Another blogger wrote: If you are convicted of murder or some other heinous crime and there is 100 percent proof through either DNA or eye witness that you did it - then you get the death penalty - no appeals! Take them out of the courtroom and give them the chair! No easy lethal injection where you go to sleep forever! Or even a firing squad! Cement ankle bracelets in the middle of lake Michigan would be OK too!
