Defense opens case in contractor's murder trial
Defense attorneys began attacking a prosecution case against a contractor who faces a possible death penalty if convicted of shooting his wife to death.
Lawyers for Myron Britt of Cary contended the investigation was sloppy into the death of Nancy Britt, a Wake County teacher whose body was found Aug. 23, 2003, at her sister's home in Lumberton.
A firearms expert testified that a bullet the state's expert said matched the fatal slug was too damaged to determine if it came from the same weapon. The other bullet was fired into a wall accidentally from a gun investigators contend was the murder weapon.
Defense testimony also focused on the number of security cameras and vantage points of the home. Under questioning by a prosecutor, the defense investigator said the dozens of photographs introduced by the defense didn't show the scene as it was the night of the killing.
The state has argued the defendant was in financial trouble and killed his wife to collect insurance policies. Britt has denied the killing.
